What we have learned from Y-DNA testing

The Jester Y-DNA project was started to help researchers of the surnames Jester, Jesten, Juster, Gester, Yester, Jasper, Jesper, and similar surnames identify which of the various families with these names are related. Generally speaking, the more DNA marker values two men have in common, the more closely they are related. We now have tests completed or in progress for eighteen Jesters. Through DNA testing we have confirmed that several Jester family branches are related to each other and we have disproved other relationships. To see the various lines for which one or more Jesters have tested, click on the Charts link at the top of this page.

Y-DNA testing enables us to group together Jester cousins. On the Charts page, the blue block of test results represents Jesters whose ancestors lived in Virginia and Delaware. We knew or guessed before DNA testing became available that the some of the men were related, but others in the blue block were a pleasant surprise.

The Jesters whose results are in gray have no match as yet but we hope to find more branches of these Jester lines with additional testing.
